Intro:

As modern light pollution shifts from classic sodium-vapor streetlights to aggressive, broadband white LEDs, finding the right filter for your imaging train has never been more challenging. Whether you are shooting with a fast One-Shot Color (OSC) setup, hunting for faint emission nebulae from a suburban backyard, or trying to capture pristine star colors, the glass you put in front of your sensor makes or breaks your final image.

In this comprehensive roundup, we are putting 15 popular astrophotography filters to the test. From ultra-narrow 3nm dual-band workhorses to classic broadband light pollution suppressors and infrared-pass filters, we’ve analyzed their real-world performance side-by-side.

All images were taken on the same night with the same gear(Takahashi FSQ-106ED / ASI 6200MC Pro)!!! Each image is a 100% UNEDITED in any shape way or form 5min single exposure. You be the judge on what filter is king!

1. Antlia Triband RGB Ultra II

A high-efficiency, multi-bandpass filter engineered for One-Shot Color (OSC) cameras. It suppresses light pollution while targeting key emission lines (Ha, OIII, SII, and H-beta), making it highly effective for shooting galaxies and reflection nebulae from light-polluted skies without destroying natural color balance.

2. IDAS Nebula Booster NBZ (IGAD)

A premium dual-band nebula filter designed to capture highly contrasting Ha and OIII details. Utilizing IDAS’s legendary IGAD (Ion-Gun Assisted Deposition) technology, it features incredible coating durability and minimizes bandpass shifting—making it outstanding for ultra-fast optical systems (down to f/1.9).

3. IDAS LPS-D1 (MBT & IGAD)

The classic light pollution suppression standard. It is specifically balanced to target common artificial light pollution (like sodium and mercury vapor street lamps) while preserving incredibly accurate star colors on digital SLR and OSC astronomy cameras.

4. Baader UHC-L / Ultra-L-Booster (#2961563)

An upgraded, CMOS-optimized Ultra High Contrast (UHC) filter. It blocks modern LED light pollution, street glow, and natural skyglow, acting as a high-contrast luminance booster that brings out faint emission nebulae details.

5. IDAS NBZ-II (48mmST2 MBT IAD B046)

The evolved successor to the NBZ. The NBZ-II tightens up the bandpass for even higher contrast while remaining optimized for super-fast focal ratios. It ignores the dreaded bandpass shift on fast scopes, keeping transmission exceptionally high.

6. Optolong L-eXtreme

One of the most popular dual-band filters on the market for OSC astrophotographers. By narrowing down the Ha and OIII bands to 7nm, it aggressively slices through urban light pollution and even bright moonlight to deliver stunning nebular contrast.

7. Astronomik ProPlanet 642 BP (#2850004290)

A specialized near-infrared (NIR) bandpass filter. By blocking wavelengths shorter than 642nm, it allows you to shoot in the IR spectrum where atmospheric turbulence (“seeing”) has a much lower impact. It is a secret weapon for razor-sharp planetary imaging and lunar photography.

8. Sightron Japan Dual BP EX

An elite Japanese-made dual-band filter designed to isolate Ha and OIII lines with pristine optical clarity. Engineered specifically to curb annoying halos around bright stars, it delivers incredibly clean and pinpoint stellar profiles.

9. Chroma Luminance (Part #422425)

A premium, research-grade 2-inch Luminance filter. Known for industry-leading steep cut-off edges and flat-top transmission, it passes the entire visible spectrum while completely blocking out UV and IR to prevent star bloating in monochrome imaging trains.

10. IDAS NGS1 (LPS-D3) (48mmS MBT IAD)

Specifically formulated to combat modern broadband white LED streetlights, which older light pollution filters struggle to block. It retains natural, balanced star colors, making it highly effective for galaxy imaging from suburban neighborhoods.

11. Optolong L-Ultimate

An ultra-narrow dual-band filter that pulls out emission details with a razor-thin 3nm bandpass. By isolating $H\text{-}\alpha$ and $O\text{III}$ to this extreme degree, it completely darkens the background sky, allowing you to capture stunning nebulae even from major city centers.

12. IDAS NBZ-II (48mmST2 MBT IAD B046) (Copy 2)

The evolved successor to the NBZ. The NBZ-II tightens up the bandpass for even higher contrast while remaining optimized for super-fast focal ratios. It ignores the dreaded bandpass shift on fast scopes, keeping transmission exceptionally high.

13. OPT Triad

A groundbreaking multi-narrowband filter designed to let OSC users capture “Hubble-like” color-mapped images in a single shot. It isolates the crucial emission lines of H-Beta, OIII, and Ha while blocking out the rest of the spectrum.

14. IDAS LPS-P3 (MBT IGAD)

An exceptional broadband light pollution suppression filter tailored for reflection nebulae and galaxies. It targets artificial skyglow peaks while leaving vital stellar and dust lane colors untouched, providing unmatched color balance out of the box.

15. Optolong UV/IR Cut

A must-have utility filter for any astrophotographer. It blocks unwanted ultraviolet and infrared wavelengths that cause chromatic aberration and star-bloated “halos” on digital sensors, while maintaining a clear 95%+ transmission across the visible spectrum.
